Each locale in the CSI family has their own color palette: the original series is a dingy, seedy green, while New York is shot in gloomy blue hues. Miami, on the other hand, is a rich meld of citrus yellows and oranges, as bright as star David Caruso's hair. Yet with all the muscle-beach shots and balmy palm trees, grisly crime scenes are waiting to be dusted. The third season of CSI: Miami starts off with a bang (literally) as cast regular Rory Cochrane is killed in the line of duty. His death casts a shadow over the Miami crew, who have the courtesy to mention his name every few episodes or so. Instead of replacing Cochrane with a colorful new character, however, he's replaced by replicas of the other shows. One is young, inexperienced Ryan Wolfe (Jonathan Togo, bearing a resemblance to the original CSI's young, inexperienced Eric Szmanda). Also joining the cast full-time is Det. Yelina Salas (Sofia Milos), who brings a Raphaelite beauty to the cast a la Melina Kanakeredes from CSI: NY, but she has very little to do but receive longing glances from Horatio Crane (Caruso), who still harbors feelings for her. Too bad she's the widow of Crane's dead brother.
Miami's unusual cases include an axe murderer (Eric Roberts) with an apprentice; a Romeo who dies at a speed-dating event; a corpse whose skull must be boiled for processing; a party girl crushed to death by a snake; and a crime scene that involves a tsunami (yes, that's right.). Even pro skateboarder Tony Hawk turns up as--what else?--a pro skateboarder who's killed while motion-capturing himself for a video game. The best thing in CSI: Miami is Caruso, who gets more yardage out of Horatio Crane than the other CSI franchise leads. As a detective, he isn't restricted to swabbing people's mouths but gets to pull out a gun and strong-arm suspects. He also may have the biggest love for over-the-top dramatic pauses on television ("Because. The evidence. Is. The. One. Who's. Talking."), but he's having fun doing it.--Ellen A. Kim

I like the Horatio CAINE character and am a huge fan of actor David CARUSO. CSI MIAMI also has the great advantage of unusual diverse locations (the ocean, the Everglades, marinas, etc) which are great backdrops for exciting crime stories, while on the other hand in Vegas there is just desert and neon-lights and New York has been the setting of too many movies and series to be "fresh". Besides, CSI MIAMI stars stunningly beautiful Southern Belle Emily PROCTER :) I finished the DVD box of season three a couple of days ago. It is great stuff that will appeal to all fans of the series. What I found particularly fascinating with season three is the effort and expenditure that went into it - you know, the episodes are more like condensed feature films for cinematic release. Anyone who has watched the show realizes that Horatio, unlike Gil Grissom or Mac Taylor, is the true star of the show. The rest of the CSIs are entertaining, but the show is truly about him. This dynamic, when combined with the glamour and glitz of the Miami setting and crimes most foul, make this for me the CSI that is above the rest. Plotwise, season 3 is bit over the top. Issues covered in this season include a stalker murder, a sports star on trial for his wife's murder, a young woman killed in a club, the murder of a uniformed cop, gang warfare in a hospital, the killings of IRS agents, speed dating that ends in a death, spree killing, and the murder of a wingwoman. I really like this cast (and in the first episode of this season we lose Tim Speedle (who I thought was pretty good in it - maybe a little dull but a nice guy). That was a sad episode but his replacement Ryan Wolfe (who's so cute) does a good job in filling the void. He's an ex cop and takes some time fitting in with the team. One thing you'll notice if you watch all three franchises is the colour they use for each show. I find Miami is the most colourful. Their lab is sleeker but the outdoor shots are stunning and use vibrant colours - often a lot of yellowy orangey tones (whereas New York is dull and blue and grey and Vegas is somewhere in the middle). There are 24 episodes in this season and I'm always impressed with how they keep it fresh and different. Someday I'm expecting them to run out of ideas, but in the meantime it's always... Read more |
